Once she said it she realized just how long she had been trying not to say it. It was a bell best left unrung, and James's reaction illustrated that with unquestionable clarity.

In retrospect yes, she absolutely should have been quieter when finally voicing aloud the thing she had known she was better off not asking after, but when it seemed as though the moment had come Lily couldn't stop herself.
