"Merlin's balls!" James staggered backwards so sharply that he almost fell back through the portrait hole, clutching at his chest in a gesture that was, for once, unintentionally dramatic. The dim firelight gleamed on his glasses, hiding just how wide his eyes had opened, but not doing anything to hide the overall look of horror on his face. He hadn't expected her to be lying in wait like that, hadn't expected her to be ready for him. He definitely hadn't expected her to be onto him.
...Well, all right, maybe that wasn't entirely true. Maybe he had expected it. She was smart, and nosy, and extremely stubborn when she put her mind to it, and there was a reason he hadn't wanted to give her even as much information as he had done. So maybe he'd expected it. But he'd hoped.
And he definitely hadn't expected her to be that blunt.
He looked around wildly, and fumbled for his wand, casting a Silencing Charm as quickly as he could. Even with that in place, he whispered, instinctively lowering his voice.
"You can't just say shit like that, Evans! What if someone believed you?"
