The way he confirmed her suspicions sat oddly with her. It wasn't that she didn't believe him, but something about everything he presented her with that afternoon made her feel as though it were more of a 'yes, and' rather than just a matter of simple affirmation. She could tell it was a struggle for him to get any of it out - in truth it looked as though he were barely holding it together. It made her feel guilty for pressing him even after he rebuffed her, after saying (rather strangely by her assessment) that he didn't need a friend.
It was an out she had been hoping he would give her for a very long time, but now that he claimed not to want anything to do with her, she felt wrong turning her back and making herself scarce. It was obvious he was hurting. Lily might not have shared the feelings James did for her, but she wouldn't wish the sort of personal discord he seemed to be wading through on anyone.
"I won't press you on it, and I won't," she narrowed her eyes, tilting her head from side to side as though she were attempted to weigh her word choice. "Foist myself on you, but I'll be taking notes for you Potter when you miss class, and you're just going to have to stick your chin up and endure my help."
