He'd dangled the prospect of her inevitable infatuation in front of her many times over the years, always with that smug enthusiasm that was equal parts endearing and vexing. She hadn't heard it used as deflection before, and Lily wasn't sure how it made her feel, beyond concerned.
"Hardly," she began, trying to play it off. "You couldn't hope to keep up with me on your best day James Potter, now that you've become a bit gloomy I'm certain my company would leave you utterly ravaged." It wasn't much, but it was an attempt to nudge him back to that familiar bravado.
As soon as she'd spoke Lily sighed, frowned again as she approached, her hand coming to rest on his arm. "But, if you do need a friend James," looking up at his face, her eyes stayed on his. "I'll run the risk to be here for you." He was infuriating, but he was very clearly hurting about something, and no matter what her darkest worries might have been she couldn't just drop the matter and give up on him.
